About Goa

Goa (capital city: Panaji) is a small state located on the western coast of India. It was liberated from Portuguese colonial rule in 1961 and became a state in the Union of India.

Known for its picturesque beaches, history, architecture and vibrant nightlife, Goa is hugely popular with international and domestic travelers alike. Having been a Portuguese territory for over 450 years, Goan culture is an interesting amalgamation of both Eastern and Western cultures. Goa has many UNESCO World Heritage Sites – including churches and convent complexes. Goa is also a biodiversity hot spot and is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna.

Goa is situated in the tropics with warm, humid weather for most of the year. Temperatures in September can range between 22 – 30 degrees Celsius.

Goan cuisine is famous for its wide range of seafood options – with a typical local meal being fish curry and rice. Restaurants and cafes serving popular Indian and international cuisines are widely available in Goa. Lonely Planet has some suggestions on food, activities, shopping and sightseeing that can be done in Goa.
